Later, in 1953, they built and then ran a store and a dance hall. The store stocked groceries, drapery, delicatessen lines and liquor; this is also were they sold the first cappuccinos in Alice Springs. The dance hall was likely the first 'night spot' in Alice Springs. Giuseppe also built flats including the Gagliardi flats he named for himself.
In 1988 Giuseppe was honoured with the title of 'Cavalieri' for his services to the Italian community.
Maria and Giuseppe briefly retired to Adelaide but, within 4 years, returned to Alice Springs where Maria died in September 1998 and Giuseppe December 1999. They are both buried at Alice Springs Garden Cemetery.
