Function / Content

This series consists of files of correspondence relating to the reporting of the statistics on the production of gold and minerals production, sale and transfer of minerals and employment . The returns relate to production and sale of gold, bauxite, sand and gravel, tin, tantalite, gold, iron ore, scheelite, molybdenite, uranium, wolfram, tin, lead, mica, zinc, copper, tungsten, gas and oil by mining companies. Returns are also provided from the sale and deposit of gold and silver by banks from mines. From 1980, the Department of Mines and Energy commenced the collection of mining statistics on behalf of the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics to reduce the burden on mining companies completing returns to multiple agencies. Returns from 1979/80 also include employment statistics such as number of persons employed in the underground and surface development and production, and in the processing and exploration of minerals. Annual summaries have also been included for 1967-1988.
