How to Use the Records

The volume was originally intended to be a Departmental Register of Accounts (form no. 23), however, it was converted for other uses. There is an index to the locations at the beginning of the volume. Amalgamation of leases are filed under the letter X, miner's rights are also filed under the letter X, appointments of agents are filed under the letters W and Y and the creation of shares are filed under the letters W, X, Y and Z. A reference microfilm of the register is available in NTRS 2606.

Function / Content

This series consists of a register of gold leases which was initially used to record leases in the Barrow Creek District (e.g. Granites, Tanami and Tennant Creek) then became a register for Tennant Creek only. The register of gold leases section of the volume, which makes up the majority of the volume, is divided into columns recording registration number, date, name, particulars (period of service, quantity, rates, etc.), amount, appropriation to be charged, date of form 20 [twenty] on which payment is authorized [authorised] and remarks. Registration numbers range from G1-GML 569. Entries are sorted by registration number and notes are made throughout in red or blue pen relating to subsequent updates. Some entries are also stamped regarding their forfeiture and the related date. Pages at the rear of the volume are used to record information regarding the amalgamation of leases, miner's rights, the appointment of agents and the creation of shares. The section regarding the amalgamation of leases is divided into columns for registration number, date, name/s, lease, fees and remarks; the registration sequence is 101-108. The section relating to miner's rights, one page only, is divided into three sets of columns for registration number, date and name and the registration sequence is 223 - 1613. The section relating to appointments of agents consists of two pages, each of which is divided into columns for registration number, date, name of agent, for whom appointed, date cancelled and by whom cancelled and the registration sequence is 161-200 and 1-53. Finally the section relating to the creation of shares are divided into columns for registration number, date, names of shareholders, lease, number of shares, number of miner's right, signed by and remarks; the registration sequence is 1-76. There is some correspondence stored within the volume
