Function / Content

This series consists of monthly reports, activity summaries and correspondence from the senior resident geologist of the Bureau of Mineral Resources. In 1946, the Commonwealth Government established the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). The discovery of uranium at Rum Jungle in 1949 provided much needed impetus for geological investigations by BMR in Northern Australia. In 1952, BMR set up a regional office in Darwin and employed a number of geological staff whose main aim was to carry out regional geological mapping. Systematic regional mapping of all of the NT commenced in 1953, resulting in the publication of First Edition 1:250 000-scale geological maps and explanatory notes through the 1960s and early 1970s. At the same time, the Resident Geological Section of the Northern Territory Administration (NTA) conducted geological investigations of local relevance. Until 1956, this section was run by geologists on secondment from BMR. Box 2 contains analyses, field logs, calculations, plans and reports concerning bauxite in the Wessel Islands, Northern Territory.
