705 Northern Territory Library/State Reference Library/State Library of the Northern Territory

Date Range:1980 - 2019

Description

The Northern Territory Library collects, preserves and shares Territory history, culture and stories, and leads, develops and represents the Northern Territory library sector.
The Northern Territory Library had its origins in the Darwin library service; formally reopened on July 11 1951 with a grant of 1000 pounds and a stock of 4000 books as part of the European, Social and Welfare Services Branch of the Northern Territory Administration. Erica Wiltshire was the first trained librarian and she was appointed under the National Library Liaison Office together with an assistant. They travelled to Darwin in 1952 where they physically re-established the library for reference and lending. The National Library Extension Service then continued to oversight the Northern Territory Public Lending Services for the Northern Territory Administration until 31 December 1976. The service was transferred to Northern Territory administration within the Department of Community Services as part of the transfer of functions from the Commonwealth Public Service.
The institution, which is today known as the Northern Territory Library, opened in 1980 as the State Reference Library led by Ron Davis. The collection of 15,000 volumes was housed on one floor of a government building in Cavenagh Street. By 1986 the library had extended its footprint over all three floor of that building.
A name change in 1991 to State Library of the Northern Territory recognised its position among Australia's state libraries. Its role now fully reflected its functions in collecting, preserving and presenting the historical and cultural treasures of the Northern Territory.
A relocation in 1995 to the newly built Parliament House coincided with a Parliamentary Libray merger and a further renaming in 1997 to the title it holds today.
A 2020 merger of the Northern Territory Library and the Northern Territory Archives Service within the Department of Families, Housing and Communities to form Library & Archives NT (LANT), led to the services being provided from three physical sites: LANT Parliament House; LANT Millner; and the Alice Springs reading room. and through a range of on-line channels.
