Function / Content

This series consists of a total of 41 486 individual child patient admission cards and birth cards which were maintained to form a longitudinal study of child health in the Northern Territory. Dr Alan Walker, Head of Paediatrics at the Royal Darwin Hospital, oversaw the documentation of data onto these cards by nursing staff. The cards also include details of child patients sent to Darwin for medical attention from remote areas in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland. The majority of the cards relate to child patient admissions to the Royal Darwin Hospital, with a smaller group of 9955 birth cards for the period 1972 to 2000. Annotations on the birth cards relate to babies identified for adoption or in foster care, and acronyms such as BBA (Born Before Arrival - babies born on the way to hospital) and NND (Neo-Natal Death). Stillbirths were also recorded. The child patient admission cards include some or all of the following details; child/infant name, mother's name and residential location, date of birth, Hospital Registration Number (HRN), date of admission, date of discharge, and summary of medical conditions and treatments. The birth information cards include some or all of the following details; child/infant name, mother's name and residential location, date of birth, Hospital Registration Number (HRN), birth details (including gender, height, weight, and head circumference), date of admission, date of discharge, and summary of medical conditions and treatments. Also included are a small number of case summary cards with references to slides relating to children/infants with conditions ranging from cardiovascular system issues, congenital malformations, and foetal alcohol syndrome to infectious diseases and non-accidental injuries (card nos 35/925-35/1048, box no.35).
