Function / Content

This series consists of registration files relating to business names maintained by the Registrar of Companies. The files were kept in numerical order with 'Firm' as the prefix for files created during 1935-1962 as the Business Name Ordinance 1935 related to the registration of firms which were defined as "two or more persons lawfully associated for the purpose of carrying on any business" and business was defined as "trade and profession". After the Ordinance was amended in 1962 a definition was included for business name (name, style, title or designation under which a business is carried on) and the prefix 'BN' (business name) was used rather than the former prefix 'Firm'. The running number order continued regardless of changes to legislation. The prefixes were not used on the certificate of registration; only the number was recorded. Files include applications for business names, certificates of registration of business names, and notices of cessation of business names (if applicable).
