1071 Northern Territory Cattle Council

Date Range:1979 - 1984

Description

The Northern Territory Cattle Council (NTCC) was established in 1979 following the adoption of a new constitution by the Northern Territory Cattle Producers' Council. The member organisations of the Northern Territory Cattle Council were the Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association, Cattlemens Association of North Australia, and the Centralian Cattlemen's Association.

The Northern Territory cattle industry was represented by both the NTCC and Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch at the Cattle Council of Australia.

In 1982 the Council and the Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association moved their office from Sydney to Darwin. Mr de Vos (Secretary) chose not to move to Darwin and Mr Cliff Emerson was appointed Secretary of both organisations in 1982.

Negotiations were then opened between the member organisations of the Council and the Cattlemens' Union, NT Branch, to discuss the concept of a single body industry organisation representing the Northern Territory cattle industry.

In 1983 the Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association along with the Centralian Cattlemen's Association and the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch, formed the Industry Organisation Steering Committee (IOSC) to discuss the formation of a single body industry organisation. A report was presented to the organisations, including a draft constitution for the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association, for further discussion at the December 1983 meeting of the Council.

The draft constitution of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association was endorsed by the executive members of the Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association, Centralian Cattlemen's Association and the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch, in Darwin during April 1984.

The Cattlemen's Union (NT Branch) was admitted to the Council on an informal basis for the period 1 January 1984 to 30 June 1984 pursuant to the planned creation of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association.

The Northern Territory Cattle Council was formally dissolved by members who then participated in the inaugural meeting of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association in Tennant Creek on 11 July 1984.
