1072 Central Australian Pastoral Lessees Association/Centralian Pastoralists Association/Centralian Cattlemen's Association

Date Range:1947 - 1984

Description

The Central Australian Pastoral Lessees Association was established by 1947 to represent the interests of its members, the pastoral lease holders of Central Australia. After a few years it was reorganised into the Centralian Pastoralists Association (CPA). Edward (Eddie) John Connellan was a long time and active member of the Executive of the CPA and was President in 1950 and 1951. He also published a pamphlet, Drought Management and Pasture Protection in Central Australia, in 1965.

The Centralian Pastoralists Association, along with the Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association and the Cattlemen's Association of Northern Australia, established the Northern Territory Cattle Producers' Council in 1963. The Council was formed to coordinate the policies of the three associations on matters affecting the cattle industry.

By 1967 the Centralian Pastoralists Association had 60 members and Tony Greatorex was the part-time Secretary based in Alice Springs.

In 1978 the Centralian Pastoralists Association and the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch (based in Alice Springs) opened discussions about merging to form one Central Australian cattlemen's organisation. On 30 November 1978 a Steering Committee met in Alice Springs and considered the draft constitution for a new organisation prepared by Mr WEL de Vos, Secretary of the Northern Territory Cattle Producers' Council. The Centralian Pastoralists Association representatives were C Connellan, Reg Harris and Grant Heaslip while the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch was represented by B Crowson, G Dann and Ted Hayes. The name Centralian Cattlemen's Association was approved at the meeting. A draft constitution was considered clause by clause and approved with some modifications, and a record of agreement was signed by each member of the Steering Committee.

At the second Steering Committee meeting representatives of the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch, recommended major alterations to the draft constitution and would not give any undertaking to disband their organisation and join the Centralian Cattlemen's Association.

An extraordinary general meeting was held on the morning of 15 March 1979 at Wills House, Leichardt Terrace, Alice Springs to disband the Centralian Pastoralists Association. Later that day a general meeting of all cattlemen resolved to establish the Centralian Cattlemen's Association. The new Association had a membership of 54 and Reg Harris was appointed the first President of the Centralian Cattlemen's Association.

Negotiations between the Centralian Cattlemen's Association and the other member organisations of the Northern Territory Cattle Council and the Cattlemens' Union, NT Branch were opened to discuss the formation of a single body industry organisation representing the Northern Territory cattle industry.

In 1983 the Centralian Cattlemen's Association along with the Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association and the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch, formed the Industry Organisation Steering Committee (IOSC) to discuss a new industry organisation to represent the whole Northern Territory cattle industry. The Committee's report, including a draft constitution for the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association, was presented to the organisations at the December 1983 meeting of the Northern Territory Cattle Council.

The draft constitution of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association was endorsed by the executive members of the Centralian Cattlemen's Association, Northern Territory Pastoral Lessees Association and the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch, in Darwin during April 1984.

The Centralian Cattlemen's Association was formally dissolved in July 1984 with members then participating in the inaugural meeting of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association in Tennant Creek on 11 July 1984.

The former members of the Centralian Cattlemen's Association then became the Tennant Creek Branch of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association. While the former members of the Cattlemen's Union, NT Branch, established the Alice Springs Branch of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association.
