Function / Content

This series consists of Northern Territory livestock brands files from the Department of Resources and its predecessor agencies. The brands were registered with the Registrar of Brands under the Central Australian Brands Ordinance 1928, which required the use a three-letter branding system with one letter being an inverted 'T'. From 1914, several Northern Territory Brands Ordinances introduced a new three-letter brand system that included the letter 'T'. Before Commonwealth administration, the South Australian brands legislation, which had implemented a symbol and two-letter brand, had also been applied to livestock in the Northern Territory. Between 1927 and 1931, the short time period during which Central Australia and North Australia were administered as separate Territories, three-letter brands with an inverted 'T' were registered in the Central Australian region to distinguish them from the three-letter brands with a 'T', which were only used in North Australia during this time. As was the case with previous changes in brands legislation, after the reincorporation of both administrative regions into the Northern Territory on 12 June 1931, brand owners could retain their Central Australian three-letter inverted 'T' brand or apply for a new three-letter 'T' brand. Correspondence in the files ranges from applications for the registration of brands, matters regarding active brands, to cancellations or transfers. Owners of brands had to notify the Registrar of Brands in the case of noteworthy events, including the sale of a registered property, change of branding position, cancellation of brands, change of name by marriage, notification of death, and transfer of brands to a new owner. A file relating to a specific brand is not necessarily limited to one owner. Once cancelled, a 3-letter brand could be re-registered once a period of five or more years had elapsed.
