Entries are chronological by date of registration of brand. Registers also include an alphabetical index of brand owners.

Function / Content

This series consists of distinctive brand registers used for the administration of livestock identification in the Northern Territory. In accordance with the Northern Territory Brands Act and Regulations, the owner of a three-letter brand could apply for the registration of up to three distinctive brands for use on any one property. The Registrar of Brands thereupon presented the owner with a certificate for a distinctive brand. For the purposes of Section 16(1) of the Brands Act, the Registrar was required to keep a register of distinctive brands. The registers provide information including a description of the brand, name and address of the owner, reference number to the Registrar's file relating to the brand, and the date of registration of the brand. Entries were updated to indicate transfers and cancellations.
