NTRS 3626 Pastoral permits

Recording Agency:
Date Range:1902 - 1922
Access:Agreement Pending
Location:Darwin (NTAC)
Legacy Series Id:F199

Function / Content

This series consists of Northern Territory pastoral permits. These permits are indentures which cover the tenancy of Crown Lands and an attached schedule showing the area and location of the permit. A permit to occupy was a permission to occupy or use a specified parcel of unallocated Commonwealth land for twelve months. It did not allow for exclusive possession of the land and could not be transferred, sublet or mortgaged. A file may contain more than one permit relating to the same holding where there have been renewals of existing permits or a change in permit holders. The permits relate to some of the earliest and noteworthy pastoral holdings, including Victoria River Downs (Unit 1, PP 22), Delamere Downs (Unit 1, PP 53), and Auvergne (Unit 2, PP 82). Also included are permits obtained by Bovril Limited, one of the giants of the British meat industry, for Victoria River Downs, estimated to be the world's biggest cattle run at the time, and several other holdings (Unit 1, PP 6, PP 17; Unit 5, PP 253, PP 279).
