Description

The Forestry and Timber Bureau, Northern Territory Section (also known as Forest Research Institute, Northern Territory Section) commenced in 1959 at the Berrimah Experimental Station with one staff member provided by the Lands and Survey Branch of the Northern Territory Administration.
Commonwealth Parliament Hansard of Tuesday 18 April 1961 recorded the Ministerial Statement from the Minister for the Interior and Minister for Works detailing Forestry and Timber Bureau operations. The institute functioned as a division of the bureau in close association with the Australian Forestry School and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
Research functions remained with the Forestry Institute with the Northern Territory Administration, Forestry Branch taking overall responsibility from 1 July 1967.
