Description

'In 1967, a Forestry Branch was established within the Economic and Social Affairs Division of the Northern Territory Administration to carry out state type forestry functions in the Northern Territory'. The Forestry Branch assumed responsibility for 'conservation and management of native forests, reafforrestation, inventory surveys of forestry resources, utilisation of forest products, fire control. applied research and Aboriginal training in forestry. Basic research remained with the Forrest Research Institute at the Berrimah Northern Regional Station'.

Forestry Ordinance 1959-1966 provides for the control of forest resources, the granting of licences affecting forest areas and the payment of royalties for forest produce taken or utilised.
Bush Fires Control Ordinance 1965-1968 provides for the control of unauthorised wild fires, the proclamation of fire protection areas and fire danger periods.
Crown Lands Ordinance 1931-1968 provides for the reservation of land for forestry or reafforestation.
