Function / Content

This series consists of registers of stock routes in the Northern Territory. Each register includes an index with reference to page number for each stock route: Southern, Goyder, Hugh River, Phillipson, Arltunga, North West, Mount Lloyd, Sandova, Elkedra, Jervois, North South, Barkly, South Barkly, Lake Nash, Murranji, Wave Hill, Birdum, Dry River, Coolibah, Auvergne, Borroloola, Urapunga, Negri, and a section for Miscellaneous. The details recorrded for each stock route includes (1) Name of Stock Route, (2) Total length in miles, (3) General description of course and direction, including width. The details of the (4) Stock Reserves on or near the areas stock route, are recorded in columns for name, location, area in square miles, installations and equipment, limitations on use. (5) Public watering places on the areas stock route records number, name, distance in miles between waters/totals, type (bore, dam), pumping equipment, type and capacity of storage tanks, capacity of dam in cubic yards, troughing in feet, fencing, other installations and equipment (6) Public dips on or near the area stock route records number, location, capacity, installation and equipment, remarks. The registers were created under Stock Routes and Travelling Stock Ordinance 1954-1960 Regulation 4. The volumes record the same typed information, with different information added, amended or crossed out.
