Function / Content

This series consists of registers recording monthly returns of gold, silver and platinum as required under the Gold Buyers Ordinance. Each licensee was required to post a return in duplicate to the Director of Mines of the Northern Territory before the eighth of the month containing the transactions recorded in the Gold Entry Book during the month immediately preceding the month in which the return was made. Purchasing gold without a licence was an offence. Information recorded includes the particulars with respect to seller or depositor or (if transaction a sale made by the licensee) of the person to whom sold; number of transaction; date and time of transaction; nature of transaction giving particulars whether purchase, sale, pledge; mortgage, or deposit for safekeeping or for export; full Name; apparent age; business or calling; address; whether or not personally known to licensee; where gold/silver/platinum obtained (if sale etc. to licensee or deposit with him); name, number and locality of lease, claim or other place from which gold/silver/platinum was obtained; if not won or obtained by person, dealing, name, occupation, and place of abode of person from whom obtained and date obtained from him; weight of gold/silver/platinum in Troy Ounces(oz t), Pennyweight(dwt) and grams(g); value of price and how paid. Where the gold was smelted from quartz, the price for the additional silver was also provided. Each page of the register included correspondence from the Banks in Darwin to the Director of Mines regarding the Return. Also included are receipts from the Perth Mint. P1 consists of registers bound with metal covers.
