Function / Content

This series consists of geological maps produced by the Mines Branch of the Northern Territory Administration to assist with mining and major infrastructure development in the Northern Territory. Many of the maps relate to other lands and mining records held within the archives. In addition to mapping requirements required for mining development, the mapping done includes that required for water, dam and bore sites within aboriginal communites such as Warrabri and on pastoral stations such as Avon Downs, as well as for projects like the ELDO project. The ELDO [European Launcher Development Organisation] satellite tracker near Gove tracked the flight path of Woomera rockets throughout the 1960s into the early 1970s. Folders 27 and 28 contain a series of survey mapping completed by the private United Uranium NL exploration team led by Joe Fischer. This team found a uranium deposit in 1954 which they named El Sherana which was to become an extremely large producer of high grade uranium ore along the South Alligator River valley.
