How to Use the Records

Historical information available from the Land Titles Office helps to explain numbering anomolies occurring within the instrument series. The Land Titles Office was first established in Adelaide, South Australia in 1841. Northern Territory land information was held in Register books in Adelaide. At Federation, responsiblity for this function and the Register books themselves transferred to the Department of Home Affairs...initially in Adelaide and then in Melbourne from 1911-1927. In 1927 the Department of the Interior moved the Register books to Darwin. During World War 11 the Register books were kept in Alice Springs and returned to Darwin after the end of the war.

This series consists of land titles instruments registered with the Land Titles Office dealing with matters such as transfers of lots, mortgages and discharges of mortgage, leases, notices of deaths, powers of attorney, surrenders of crown leases, caveats and changes of name.
