The Commission was responsible for planning and developing the Territory's system of terrestrial and marine parks and reserves, along with other land. It managed parks and reserves for conservation and the provision of tourism and recreational experiences for visitors. The nine member Board was elected for a period of two years and members could be reappointed.
On 28 March 1980, the newly formed Conservation Commission took over these functions. Irrespective of administrative change, the official emblem, often found on file covers and letterheads, always remained the wedge-tailed eagle.
