976 Interim Darwin Town Management Board/Darwin Town Management Board

Date Range:1947 - 1954

Description

Darwin Town Management Board was officially formed on 1 October 1947 after the Darwin Town Management Ordinance (no.7 of 1947) was gazetted on 18 September 1947. An interim Board had been meeting since July 1947 in preparation for the Ordinance.

The Board handled all applications for land within the Darwin CBD (including Parap, Fannie Bay, the Nightcliff and Tiwi areas) with the Lands Department responsible for the other areas (most of the Hundred of Bagot).

The Administrator issued a directive (no.1, 24 September 1947, file. Part 1) requesting that the Board "carry out its functions in more than an advisory capacity and accepts all responsibility for the carrying out of Ordinance no.7 of 1947."

The minutes for the first meeting of the Interim Board on 13 June 1947 shows members present as; RR Murray, acting Chief Clerk; AR Miller, Chief Surveyor; and WGR Gilfillan, Principal Engineer.

The Darwin Town Management Ordinance ceased to have effect in the area of Darwin administered by the Darwin Municipal Council as directed by the Local Government Ordinance 1954.
