The leases are arranged by volume and folio number. Registration dates for the leases commence 7 May 1928 and end 18 June 1935.

Function / Content

This series consists of crown leases held in volumes (split from bindings during a scanning project undertaken by the agency prior to transfer). The leases were issued pursuant to the Territory of North Australia Crown Leases Ordinance 1927. The type of leases include pastoral, crown (mineral), agriculture (fixed farming and grazing), agricultural (cultivation farm), town lands, miscellaneous lease. Information recorded on the lease includes volume and folio number, type of lease, lease no, lessee details such as name and occupation, description of lease area (including location and boundaries), and lease details such as date and amount of rent or lease (often referred to as 'one peppercorn if demanded'). Resumptions, transfers, mortgages, power of attorney, and conditions of the lease and a plan of the lease area are included. The pastoral leases are signed and dated by the Chairman or member of the Commission, lessee, witness, surveyor-general, and Minister of State for Home Affairs. The crown leases are signed by the Government Resident, witness and lessee.
