This series consists of correspondence relating to Bills of Sale. Most correspondence is from the Deputy Registrar of Bills of Sale in Darwin, forwarding copies of Bills of Sale on to the central registry (based in Melbourne, 1911-1927, and then in Canberra, 1927-1938). The file titled "File of Papers, Subject: Bills of Sale" includes is a letter, dated 29/6/1927, explaining the administrative division of the Northern Territory into North Australia and Central Australia, with a copy of the Bill of Sales Ordinance No.3 1927 attached. As at 1 March 1927 the Deputy Registrar for the Northern Territory became the Deputy Registrar for North Australia. Bills of Sale for Central Australia were forwarded to the registry in Melbourne to be registered by the Deputy Registrar for Central Australia. The Instruments Ordinance 1935 amalgamated the registration of Bills of Sale, stock mortgages, and Liens, and created a new position in Darwin, the Deputy Registrar of Instruments.
