656 Office of Business Affairs

Description

The Northern Territory Office of Business Affairs came into existence on 1st January 1991, to carry out the statutory functions of Registrar of Business Names, Associations, Credit Unions, Building Societies and Co-operative Societies, and to provide advice on matters of Corporate Law Policy to the Attorney-General.
The Office provided a public search facility in respect of lodged documents; a wide range of documentation lodged under the various pieces of legislation administered by the Office was examined and, if appropriate, filed and registered; and the day to day administration of the Building Societies and Credit Union Act was dealt with. In addition, the Office provided information to the Registrar of Land and Business Agents when there was a requirement to conduct inspections or investigation of Land and Business Agents and the Deputy Registrar, Office of Business Affairs was also the Deputy Registrar of Land and Business Agents.
The Office of Business Affairs provides services to the Attorney-General, the Government, Government Departments and agencies, and the public through:

- the provision of policy advice to the Attorney-General and the Government on corporations law and financial institutions legislation,
- the provision of registration and search facilities,
- the provision of supervision, inspections and monitoring services.

The role and functions of the Office appear to have remained the same until 1997/98 when they became part of the Office of the Registrar-General.
