Function / Content

This series consists of a files relating to the registration of foreign companies. Files include copies of certificates of registration, memoranda of association, and notices of business correspondence. File covers were annotated when a company was struck off the register. The Companies Act 1892 defined a foreign company as any business incorporated outside of South Australia, and then the Foreign Companies Ordinance 1926-1935 changed the definition to any business incorporated outside the Northern Territory. From 1936-1962 the Companies Act 1892 was again in operation for foreign companies. The Companies Ordinance 1963 changed the way the files were kept as a foreign company was defined as any business incorporated outside the Northern Territory, or without a head office or principal place of business in the Northern Territory. As at 1963 active files relating to foreign companies were removed from NTRS 3097 and became part of this series.
