How to Use the Records

An alphabetical index relating to active local company files created during 1914-1962 is available in NTRS 3098.

Function / Content

This series consists of company files relating to local and foreign companies maintained by the Registrar of Companies. The files were kept in numerical order and included local and foreign companies until 1963. The files relating to foreign companies were annotated with an F to identify them from the local companies. From 1963, active company files relating to foreign companies were moved into a new recordkeeping system; these files are available in NTRS 2762. The numerical system continued for the local companies after 1963, with a CL (company local) prefix added to any active pre-1963 company files relating to local companies. Box nos 1-27 includes active (as at 1963) local company files (annotated with the CL prefix) with inactive local and foreign company files. An alphabetical index was created circa 1963 to locate the active files (available in NTRS 3098). The files contain documents relating to the registration of companies including; statutory declarations, registration forms, balance sheets, gazette notices, memoranda, and correspondence. If a company was struck off the register a note to this effect was added to the file cover. The files were listed by unit (box) with the following information; file type whether local and foreign companies or local companies (description 2), and file number range (description 3).
