Function / Content

This series consists of correspondence files relating to the repurchase, by former owners who had returned to Darwin, of improvements on lands which were compulsorily acquired by the Commonwealth on 17 January 1946 under the Darwin Lands Acquisition Act 1945. Former owners were given preference to repurchase improvements based on the amount of compensation paid by the Commonwealth in 1946. The application and approval process was run by the Darwin Town Management Board, and if they were successful a new lot number was issued and the land was converted to a 99 year lease. Includes files relating to the United Church (file no.30), Cashmans Shop (file no.33), Church of England (file no.34), and the Methodist Overseas Mission (file no.53). The files are arranged by holding number and include numbers 1-520 (some numbers are missing).
