How to Use the Records

The lease numbers for each volume include; volume 1 (nos. 1 - 835), volume 2 (nos. 837 - 1400), volume 3 (nos. 1401 - 1783), volume 4 (nos. 1784 - 2212), volume 5 (nos. 2383 - 2387a, 2251a, 2297a, number system changes from 1925 to nos. 101 - 198c), and volume 6 (nos. 1 - 2382).

Function / Content

This series consists of registers of pastoral leases. The registers were used to record the following information; lease number, application number, situation (location), area in square miles, lessee and address (separate lines for four entries), date of lease, date of commencement, term of lease, date when declared stocked, rent payable annually in advance on, amount for first seven years per annum and per square mile, amount after first seven years per annum and per square mile, debit (rent and amount due), credit (date of payment, amount paid on account of rent, amount of penalty paid, number of letter), and remarks. All the registers contain annotations regarding the payment of rent, and cancellation, transfer, forfeit or surrender of leases. Volumes 1 to 5 were used to record new leases with a note at the end of volume 5 stating no further entries were to be made and all new entries would be recorded on cards. Volume 6 was used to record renumbered leases, and surrendered leases which were incorporated into other lease numbers.
