Description

The Department of the Northern Territory had as its primary role the administration of the Northern Territory of Australia, the Territory of Asmore and Cartier Islands. One of four divisions, the Resource Devision, promoted and serviced the economic resources of the Northern Territory. The Forestry, Fisheries, Wildlife, Environment and National Parks Branch within the division of the Department of the Northern Territory was responsible for forestry, fisheries, wildlife, environment and national parks.
The major functions of the branch included: to develop, implement and review policy for development of forestry, fishing and pearling industries in the Northern Territory; to develop, implement and review policy relatiing to national parks and wildlife conservation; examine and review legislation; undertake legislative compliance activities; undertake forestry management programmes; provision of extension services; and management of flora and fauna reserves.

Creation

Administrative change 16 April 1973 when the Public Service Board approved the departmental top level structure for the Department of the Northern Territory.
