Description

She undertook research work in various capacities during that time. In 1991 she commenced work as a project officer on a community relations project with Suzanne O'Neill funded by the Office of Multicultural Affairs on policing strategies in Indigenous and cultural and linguistically diverse speaking communities. It was the first time outside researchers were based at Berrimah Police Headquarters. The project included a review of the Aboriginal Police Aide Scheme.

She subsequently commenced a PhD at the Northern Territory University (now Charles Darwin University) in 1995. Her thesis topic was the history of the Pine Creek area. Most of the field work including oral history tape recordings and banner work (with the assistance of Joanna Barrkman) was undertaken between 1996 and 1998. The thesis was finally completed in 2004 under the title "Replenished: sources of meaning, sources of history in the Pine Creek area, Northern Territory, Australia".

During the course of her thesis work Jane undertook a number of paid projects which included work with Indigenous people. A project for the National Trust (NT) and Tiwi Land Council was undertaken in 1996 with Darrell Lewis examining shared sites of historical significance entitled "Nginaki Ngirramini Ngini Tiwi Amintiya Mamurruntawai: this is a story about Tiwi and non-Tiwi, culture contact sites on Tiwi Islands" (1999).

In 1997 Jane undertook a project with funding from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) in conjunction with Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) in Darwin on mapping memory places of a senior Wagiman woman.

Dr Bathgate is now a Senior Research Assistant, Centre for Credit and Consumer Law, at Griffith University.
