|  Agency DetailsThe creation of the position of Inspector, 3rd Class, Clerical Division, Auditor-General's Office, Darwin, Northern Territory was notified in the Commonwealth Gazette of 28 September 1922 (No. 78, p. 1639). The appointment of John Roy Davis to the position as from 9 November 1922 was notified on 28 December 1922 (Commonwealth Gazette, No. 110, 28 Dec. 1922, p. 2802).
By 1926 the position was designated 'Auditor' (Federal Guide, October 1926, p. 8).
By 1943, there was no Darwin position mentioned in the Guide, although there was an Auditor's position in Alice Springs. Presumably the agency moved to Alice Springs at the time of the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese.
By 1946, a new position of Chief Auditor had been established in Darwin, the incumbent being S.G. Martin, Inspector, who was acting in the position. (List of Permanent Officers of the Commonwealth Public Service, 30 June 1946, p. 81). By 1951, RMG. Stevens was appointed to the position. (Federal Guide, 1951, p. 20).
At the time of the publication of the Northern Territory Government Directory in July 1978 (p.9) theAuditor-General's Office in Darwin (a Commonwealth Public Service agency) was servicing the Northern Territory Public Service agencies on an interim basis. The Chief Minister's Department of the Northern Territory Government assumed responsibility for audit from 26 January 1982 and the Office closed.
