Date Range:1950 - 1967

Description

The Bagot Settlement School opened at the Bagot Aboriginal Reserve under the Native Affairs Branch of the Northern Territory Administration with seventeen children, under Ernest Alfred Tambling, AKA the "Swaggie teacher", who had applied for the position of inaugural head teacher on 3 April 1950. He was to teach in the Northern Territory for thirty years.

The Settlement School operated under the Office of Education of the Northern Territory Administration from 1950 until 1967. A preschool was opened in 1964 in the old recreation hall at Bagot reserve with 21 students and a qualified pre-school teacher. The children followed a school educational curriculum as well as being supervised for self care, receiving meals and medical care from the on-site medical sisters and the Bagot Hospital.

At the beginning of 1967 when enrollment had reached 42 children with 2 primary teachers, thirteen children ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 6, chosen for their scholastic ability and self care were transferred to the nearby Ludmilla School and followed the South Australian curriculum.
