The function of correctional services was gradually devolved to the Northern Territory Government over several years with the advent of self government in 1978. Correctional services was gazetted as such and became the responsibility of the Department of Law through the Executive Member for Law from 31 December 1976. The Correctional Services Division of the Department of Community Development was gazetted via Administrative Arrangements Order Gazette S2 and became the fully responsible entity from 2 January 1979. The Correctional Services Division was moved further under administrative arrangement to a new department and minister in 1984.
