The Department of Correctional Services was disbanded and the function of correctional services was moved once more as a Division into the Department of Health and Community Services under administrative arrangements orders on 19 March 1987. This administrative rearrangement was undone in 1989 when the Department of Correctional Services was reestablished with a Minister for Correctional Services.
