Function / Content

This series consists of gaoler's journals detailing daily events relating to prisoners. Each journal records information across a double page. NTRS2604/P1 Volume 1 details the following; date, muster roll, prison cells, rations, quarries, discipline, infringement of regulations, punishments, employment of prisoners, weather, medical officer, prisoners on sick list, incurables, report of night guard, report of guard at 6am, report of guard at 9pm, thermometer in prison, and remarks. The journal also notes air raid alarms. NTRS 2604/P1 Volume 2 records the following; date, muster roll, prison cells, rations, discipline, infringement of regulations, punishments, employment of prisoners, weather, medical officer, prisoners on sick list, incurables, report of night guard, thermometer readings, remarks, and numbers of prisoners (long sentence, short sentence, remand, committal, female and mental). Although the journal has "Alice Springs Gaol and Labour Prison" printed on every second page, the information recorded relates to Darwin Gaol. NTRS 2604/P1 Volume 3, NTRS 2604/P2 and NTRS 2604/P3 volumes were used to record the following information; date, muster, meal instructions, gaol inspections, employment of prisoners, weather, discipline, gaolers request, receptions, discharges, night guards reports, matrons on duty, general remarks, and a tally of prisoners (by time in prison, unconvicted, and females). There is a gap in the journal for the period after Cyclone Tracy (26 December 1974 to 12 January 1974) with reference to see the Gate Journal (NTRS 973/P1).
