Function / Content

This series consists of files relating to the livestock identification of sheep, swine and goats in the Northern Territory. Under the Northern Territory Brands Act and Regulations, owners could register brands and earmarks for sheep, swine or goats. The owner of any sheep, swine or goat could forward to the Registrar of Brands an application for the registration of a brand consisting of one or more letters, conjoined or separated. A brand was made or impressed with red or black paint, raddle or dye, or by tattooing, in the position specified by the Registrar in the certificate of registration of the brand. The position and shape of an earmark was specified in the certificate of registration of the earmark and could be no longer than 4 cm in length. Earmarks were not to be used on animals that had previously been earmarked. The owner of an earmark for sheep or swine could earmark one ear of an animal for one sex and the other ear for the other sex, which was also to be specified in the application for the registration of the earmark. With the commencement of the Northern Territory Livestock Act and Regulations in 2009, branding was confined to buffalo, cattle and horses (Livestock Regulations, Section 5) and no longer applied to sheep, swine and goats. Subjects in the correspondence include applications for the registration or cancellation of earmarks or brands, livestock statistics, brand returns, and changes in legislation.
