Function / Content

This series consists of files relating to Northern Territory livestock brands registered prior to 1928 and implementing the South Australian branding system. Prior to the development of the Northern Territory's own branding legislation and regulations, the South Australian system, which implemented combinations of symbols, letters and numerals, was also used for the branding of livestock in the Territory. Brands could consist of one letter and two numerals, or of one sign with or without two numerals, with the numerals not placed under the letter or sign. When a registered brand for horses and cattle consisted of or contained a letter or sign, no other brand consisting of or containing such letter or sign either with or without numerals, could be registered unless such other brand was so arranged as to be dissimilar to the first-mentioned brand. After the administration of the Northern Territory had been transferred from South Australia to the Commonwealth, several Northern Territory Brands Ordinances from 1914 onward eventually introduced a new three-letter brands system that included the letter 'T'. Owners were given the option of keeping a brand previously registered under the South Australian system or applying for a three-letter 'T' brand. Consequently, brands from preceding legislation could remain current long after the introduction of a new branding system. File numbers for brands remaining in use from the South Australian system eventually received a 'SA' prefix to distinguish them from brands files of other branding systems. Files contain applications for the registration, transfer and cancellation of brands and related correspondence. The files relate to brands from some of the oldest and most famous cattle stations in the Northern Territory, including the well-known 'wineglass' brand of Newcastle Waters Station (File No. 58A) and 'bulls head' brand of Victoria River Downs (VRD) (File No. 16).

Recordkeeping System

No arrangement is apparent in consignment P1. Consignment P2 and P3 are arranged by file number with 'SA' (South Australia) prefix.
