Function / Content

This series consists of brands files relating to livestock brands held by governmental departments in the Northern Territory. A wide range of departments required identification for stock, included Mining, Welfare, Police, Primary Industry, and Transport. Brands usually consisted of an upward-pointing arrow symbol between two letters. The Registrar of Brands also allotted to each public pound in the Territory a brand called a 'pound brand', which consisted of a square symbol between two letters. The keeper of each pound was required, in case of the sale of any horse or cattle impounded in that pound, to brand the horses or cattle with the pound brand in the manner prescribed. All registered brands in existence at the commencement of the Brands Act could be reallotted and registered under the Act. A brand could be cancelled or a new brand allotted as prescribed. Files consist of applications for the registration, transfer and cancellation of brands and related correspondence.
