Function / Content

This series consists of a distinctive brand file for camels registered by the Central Australian Camel Industry Association. The brand was registered under the Northern Territory Brands Act, which specified that a brand could be registered in relation to a particular species, breed or type of stock without reference to a particular place or run (Brands Act, Section 17A). Camels were first introduced to Australia from the Canary Islands in 1840. At the end of the nineteenth century, numbers of imported camels rose sharply as the animals were increasingly utilised for exploration purposes. Between 10,000 and 20,000 camels were imported between 1880 and 1907. Motor vehicles eventually replaced their use for freight haulage, and as camels became feral their numbers conitinued to grow steeply. The Conservation Commission of the Northern Territory detailed aerial survey in 1994 over the southern half of the NT indicated a population of approximately 60,000 camels. A 2001 survey by the Northern Territory Parks & Wildlife Commission estimated the feral camel population in the Northern Territory to be in excess of 200,000. Increasingly, feral camels came to be seen as pests with substantial environmental, economic and cultural impacts. The Central Australian Camel Industry Association Inc (CACIA) was made up of representatives from the pastoral industry, meat industry, Aboriginal communities, tourism operators, transport operators, contractors and Government agencies and aimed to promote the sustainable development of the camel industry. As an alternative to Government controlled culling programs, CACIA developed markets for trade in live camels and camel meat. The file contains applications for the transfer and registration of the brand to the Central Australian Camel Industry Association and related correspondence.
