Entries in the register are arranged by earmark code and position. The register also includes an alphabetical index of brand owners.

Function / Content

This series consists of an earmarks register used for the administration of livestock identification in the Northern Territory. In accordance with the Northern Territory Brands Act and Regulations, the owner of a three-letter brand could apply for the registration of an earmark for use on any one property. The Registrar of Brands thereupon presented the owner with a certificate for a registered earmark. For the purposes of Section 16(1) of the Brands Act, the Registrar was required to keep a register of earmarks. The register provided information including a description of the earmark position and code, corresponding brand, name and address of the owner, reference number to the Registrar's file, and the date of registration of the earmark. Entries were updated to indicate transfers and cancellations.
