Function / Content

This series consists of earmark control cards used for the administration of livestock earmark identification of sheep, swine and goats in the Northern Territory. The cards provide information about registered earmark codes and positions. Registered earmarks first consisted of a single letter and number code (e.g. 'D.5' or 'A.1.1'), after which a multiple letter and number code was applied (e.g. 'A.B.1', 'E.1 F.2', or 'D.E.1.2'). The letters implied a particular shape or symbol used for the earmark, and the positions 1 to 6 denoted the position on the near or off ear on which the symbol or symbols were placed. Owners could register an earmark for sheep, swine or goats for use on any one property. The position and shape of an earmark was specified in the certificate of registration of the earmark and could be no longer than 4 cm in length. Earmarks were not to be used on animals that had previously been earmarked. The owner could earmark one ear of an animal for one sex and the other ear for the other sex. The earmark control cards included diagrams of the earmark for female and male animals, details of registration including name, holding and address of owner, date of registration, a reference number to the Registrar of Brand's file and a folio number.
