How to Use the Records

The volumes in this series may be used in conjunction with the distinctive brands registers (NTRS 3640). For the purposes of Section 16(1) of the Brands Act, the Registrar was required to keep a register of distinctive brands, where entries were chronological by date of registration of brand. Registers also include an alphabetical index of brand owners.

Function / Content

This series consists of registration certificate books for distinctive brands and earmarks used for the administration of livestock identification in the Northern Territory. In accordance with the Northern Territory Brands Act and Regulations, the owner of a three-letter brand could apply for the registration of up to three distinctive brands and an earmark for use on any one property. Upon registration, the Registrar of Brands presented the owner with a certificate for a distinctive brand, with a copy of the certificate retained with the Registrar in a registration certificate book. The registration certificate books provide information including a description of distinctive brands and earmarks, certificate number, name and address of the owner, reference number to the Registrar's file and folio number relating to the brand, and the date of registration of the brands and earmarks. Certificates were updated to indicate transfers and cancellations.
