How to Use the Records

The registration certificate book in this series may be used in conjunction with the distinctive numerical register in NTRS 3641. For the purposes of Section 16(1) of the Brands Act, the Registrar was required to keep a register of numerical brands. Entries in the register are chronological by date of registration of brand. The register also includes an alphabetical index of brand owners.

Function / Content

This series consists of a registration certificate book for distinctive numerals used for the administration of horse and cattle identification in the Northern Territory. In accordance with the Northern Territory Brands Act and Regulations, distinctive numerical brands could be registered for use on a particular holding for the identification of individual animals, generally horses, in the herd. Next to the owner's brand, the distinctive numeral brand would consist of an individual sequence or drop number over the foaling year number. Upon registration of a brand, the owner of the brand would receive a certificate of registration of distinctive numerals for horses and cattle. The registration certificate book provides information including a description of numerical brands, certificate number, name and address of the owner, reference number to the Registrar's file and folio number relating to the brand, and the date of registration of brands. Certificates were updated to indicate transfers and cancellations.
