How to Use the Records

This series may be used with sheep, swine and goat brands files (NTRS 3633), which are arranged by file number, and the earmark control cards (NTRS 3645), which are arranged by earmark code and position.

Function / Content

This series consists of earmark registration certificate books used for the administration of sheep, goat and swine identification in the Northern Territory. Under the Northern Territory Brands Act and Regulations, owners could register brands and earmarks for sheep, swine or goats. Following the registration of an earmark, its position and shape were specified by the Registrar of Brands in the certificate of registration of the earmark. The owner of an earmark for sheep or swine could earmark one ear of an animal for one sex and the other ear for the other sex, which was also to be specified in the application for the registration of the earmark. The Registrar of Brands presented the owner with a certificate of registration of the earmark, with a copy of the certificate retained with the Registrar in the registration certificate book. The registration certificate books provide information including a description of earmarks, corresponding brands, certificate number, name and address of the owner, reference number to the Registrar's file and folio number relating to the brand, and the date of registration of the earmarks. Certificates were updated to indicate transfers and cancellations.
