How to Use the Records

Brands were registered in three sequences with 'T' as the third letter, then second letter, and then first. The remaining two letters of the brands were allocated alphabetically from right to left. This series may be used in conjunction with the three-letter brands files (NTRS 463), which are arranged by file number.

Function / Content

This series consists of registration certificate books for three-letter brands used for the administration of livestock identification in the Northern Territory. Three-letter brands were registered with the Registrar of Brands under Brands Ordinance 1914 and subsequent legislation, which required the use a three-letter brand system with one letter being 'T'. It was compulsory to brand cattle before they were moved off a property or sold, unless they were less than eight months of age. Though not obligatory, brands could also be used on horses, buffalo and camel. A brand was registered to a person or company for use on a nominated property. Upon registration, the Registrar of Brands presented the owner with a certificate for a three-letter brand, with a copy of the certificate retained with the Registrar in a registration certificate book. The three-letter brands registration certificate books provide information including a description of brands and related distinctive brands and earmarks, certificate number, name, property and address of the owner, and the date of registration of the brand. Certificates were updated to indicate transfers and cancellations.
