How to Use the Records

This series can be used in conjunction with the transfer of brands register (NTRS 3642). The Registrar was required to keep a register of transfer of brands (Brands Act, Section 16), which provided information including a description of the brand, name and address of the transferee and transferor, reference number to the Registrar's file relating to the brand, and the date of transfer of the brand (Brands Regulation 11).

Function / Content

This series consists of transfer of brands registration certificate books used for the administration of livestock identification in the Northern Territory. Brands could be transferred from an owner to another person through an application for transfer, upon receipt of which the Registrar would cancel the registration in the name of the transferor and register the brand in the name of the transferee. The transfer of a brand operated as a transfer of all other brands and earmarks owned in respect of the property in connection with which the transferred brand was used (Brands Regulations 21 and 22). The registration certificate books provide information including a description of transferred brands and related distinctive brands and earmarks, certificate number, name, property and address of the transferor and transferee, and the date of registration of the brand. Certificates were updated to indicate additional transfers and cancellations.

Recordkeeping System

By certificate number. After Certificates 701-800, a new numbering system that contained certificate numbers with a 'T' (transfer) prefix starts in consignment P1 and continues in consignment P2.
