Function / Content

This series consists of a gaoler's journal detailing daily events relating to prisoners. The journal records information across a double page including the date, muster roll, rations, quarries, discipline, infringement of regulations, punishments, employment of prisoners, weather, medical officer, prisoners on sick list, incurables, report of night guard, report of guard at 6am, report of guard at 9pm, thermometer in prison, and remarks. The number of prisoners by type of sentence (long, short, committal and female) are recorded at the end of the entry. This item is an estray received from Neil Thomas, who reports that it was acquired by Sydney Taylor during his service in Darwin during the Second World War. Mr Taylor requested that Mr Thomas return the item to Darwin when Mr Taylor moved into a nursing home. Mr Taylor passed away on 5 October 2013.
