Function / Content

This series consists of application files for mineral leases (ML) in District D, Maranboy area in Northern Territory. The file cover has date application received, subject (name of mine or person names in application), dates for objection, hearing, recommended, approved or refused, gazetted, posted, application plotted, map number, if forfeited or withdrawn. Each file contains the application for a mining lease with a sketch of the area being applied for and measurements in chains, any objections received, whether the application is approved or not, certificate of exemption if applied for, if lease is being transferred then the transfer application and acknowledgement form, caveat and general correspondence. The Mines Branch, Head Office, was moved to Alice Springs during the Second World War and remained there during the period 1942-1953. A Darwin office of the Mines Branch operated during 1946-1953 and was then merged with the Mines Branch, Head Office, in 1953 when it was moved back from Alice Springs to Darwin. Multiple copies of documents exist, although there is nothing to distinguish items in Consignments 1 and 2.
