Function / Content

This series consists of correspondence files for urban land applications (ULA). Each file includes correspondence from the applicant - both government and public - for land and the purpose it was intended to be used for as well as maps/plans of subject area of application. The proposed land use varies with examples being cemeteries, dumps, bowling alleys, gun clubs, power stations and law courts. If the application is successful (of which about 40 % are) the 'ULA' file is top-numbered to the relevant lease and licence series. In relation to those items created during 1975/76, relating to applications south of Katherine were allocated four digit numbers. Those matters relating to areas north of Katherine were allocated three digit numbers. The use of block allocation was a result of the functions being administered from both Brisbane and Darwin after Cyclone Tracy.
