How to Use the Records

Brands were registered in three sequences with 'T' as the third letter, then second letter, and then first. The remaining two letters of the brands were allocated alphabetically from right to left.

Function / Content

This series consists of Northern Territory livestock brands files from the Department of Resources and its predecessor agencies. The brands were registered with the Registrar of Brands under Brands Ordinance 1914 and subsequent legislation, which required the use a three-letter brand system with one letter being 'T'. It was compulsory to brand cattle before they were moved off a property or sold, unless they were less than eight months of age. Though not obligatory, brands could also be used on horses, buffalo and camel. A brand was registered to a person or company for use on a nominated property, and the branding iron was to be used only by the registered owner or their representative. Each three-letter brand could also be used in conjunction with up to three distinctive symbol brands, which could take any free-form shape not conflicting with, or not similar to, any registered brand. Once registered, a symbol brand could be used in addition to, or instead of, a three-letter brand. Traditionally symbol brands were used to indicate a sale, while later it became increasingly common to use the symbol as a logo. Correspondence in the files ranges from applications for the registration of brands, matters regarding active brands, to cancellations or transfers. Owners of brands had to notify the Registrar of Brands in the case of noteworthy events, including the sale of a registered property, change of branding position, cancellation of brands, change of name by marriage, notification of death, and transfer of brands to a new owner. A file relating to a specific brand is not necessarily limited to one owner. Once cancelled, a 3-letter brand could be re-registered once a period of five or more years had elapsed.
