How to Use the Records

Due to the fragile condition of the register, a digitised copy has been made available for research use at NTRS 3808. Burial regsistrations are generally in chronological order (except for subsequent burials), however the order for the register from 1900 (page 35) onwards appears to be earliest date at the bottom of the page. A second numbering system was commenced at grave number 90 (page 19) with two numbering systems recorded until page 53 where the single numbering pattern continues. Pages 63-65 records grave numbers A1-A13. Due to the fragile condition of the register, some dates are no longer visible. An additional index is available in NTRS 4914 for the period 1887-1917.

Function / Content

This series consists of a register of burials at the old cemetery in Goyder Road, Darwin, then known as Palmerston Cemetery. Information includes grave number, name of deceased, age, date of burial, residence, by whom buried, and cost of burial. The register also contains details of private burials in unnumbered graves, and multiple burials in the same grave at different times. The main date range of burials is from 1885-1919, with additional burial information recorded on a loose document at the back of the register for burials between 1939-1941. Subsequent burials include Amelia Albertina Kilian buried 22 November 1926 (grave 70);Mary Pantaleona Perez buried on 27 March 1984 (grave 82); Felix Spain buried 20 December 1966 (grave 185/97); Fannie Eliza Bell buried 25 November 1968 (grave 254); and Clive Oliver Bell buried 3 September 1963 (grave 255).
